How to identify your operating system

First let’s define what an OS (operating system) is; the OS is the main program that makes all the computers hardware work together. There are 3 basic OS in use today.

1. MS Windows
2. Linux
3. Mac OS

If your computer has a Linux or Mac OS you will probably already know this information. If you have a Windows computer there are many different versions of MS Windows. Knowing which version you have along with which service packs are installed will greatly help you when you have a computer problem.
Here are steps to find out which version you have.

1. Start you computer and boot to the desktop
2. Click on start and go to the control panel, some of you may have to click on the setting then control panel.
3. Find the Icon called system and double click.

You should now see the systems folder and all the information will be in this section. Vista may be slightly different than the picture below, but all information will be there.

Notice the version and service pack number in red.
